Thanks! I thought it was kind of cute too! But then after doing a little checking, I became insufferably pleased with myself.
After posting it, I googled it up (the exact phrase "benefit of the apathy") to see how many beat me to it - just out of curiosity, mind you. I never care that a silly little snippet that just occurred to me has in fact had a long and honorable history! Most of my snippets seem kind of obvious, so it's expected.
And so with this one - "benefit of the apathy" seems such a natural companion to / progression from "benefit of the doubt".
But according to Google, at least, I appear to have coined a phrase.
