99% of artistic ability is being able to see the beauty that's already there, in front of your eyes - capture it, abstract it or depict it, sign it and exhibit it.
The rest is a combination of a tendency to exaggerate, and/or a poor grasp of math. Of which I have both, in spades!

And did my Savannah clean up at the Art show?? Oh, yes, she did! Most Innovative, Best In Show, Best Watercolor, etc, etc...
That child's eyes see things others can't. I'm sooo jealous.
Dog, isn't that what makes an artist? To be able to see what everyone else is seeing but to have the gift of a unique, different perspective and to be able to recreate with words, or with paint, or music, or any medium, your personal vision of life?

I don't know what makes an artist really, but yeah, I suspect it's far more what the eye can spot than what the fingers can shape.
The gift is in the eye. The talent the fingers have, that's just the side-effect that comes from inclination and application. Plus some tricks and tips picked up from education, but mostly talent at depiction is a function of: them what loves to pass the time drawing, who start with interest and who apply themselves to it, will consequently be better at it.
Same with writing.
And in all instances, mere awesome technical skill is dead without a gifted eye to see what needs depiction.
