It's so funny sometimes, it seems like Australia/New Zealand is this whole alternate/parallel universe of classic and timeless music that none of us up here knows a damn thing about. But clearly, some of it is quite indisputably beautiful! Why weren't we told?

Don't believe me? Don't make me sing my take of "Whaling" for you. In the meantime, call me loyal.

Surely there must be a better live take version of this song out there. But the crowd just thronging on every word makes this feel priceless.

I saw this guy in 1998 in San Francisco at the 7th Note Club with Neil Finn & Friends ("& Friends" including Grant Lee Phillips), and the version of this song that he played that night has stripped my heart of varnish and left it clean ever since.

I had an experience like this when I first moved to Philly. A woman who was popular in LA was playing here, so we went to see her, assuming that the other band on the bill, something called "Carbon Leaf," was the opening act. Turns out our girl was the opening act, nobody in Philly had heard of her, nor could they be bothered to give a shit, or even stop talking during her set. The Carbon Leaf shows up and everyone goes nuts, dancing and singing along to every single word that we had never heard before. It was like being in the Twilight Zone, musically speaking.

It seems like in theory it could be a good band name, but those are some strained circumstances you describe.

That happened to me when I went to see the Strokes play with the Doves, which was in 2000 or very early 2001. I was one of possibly 8 people there to see and actually present for the Strokes, while the place busted at the seams for the Doves. I felt really bad for the Strokes, but I guess it turned out okay for them. :)

I think a little of that may have had to do with the fact that it was a rather incongruous pairing, sound-wise, so the small group of early-doors people at the venue who could have watched the Strokes just stayed out on the patio.

My story sounds dumb because they're such well-known bands, but they weren't really then.

I was just listening to videos while I did stuff, and I suddenly looked at the date of this one and saw that it coincided well with things going on in my life on that day. Ah, synchronicity.

So thanks for the link in this direction. It's the direction I wanted to go.

The Bob Dylan-y singing (and his recognition of it) is totally hilarious, btw. But the song is heartfelt, and I wish I could hear it better (his singing, not the guy in the audience).
I am loyal too. :)

Oh, kidding with the shouting already. Let's see if I can recall the whole song - I can never seem to goggle this guy's lyrics, it's like nobody bothers to put 'em out there! Or they're there, but wrong. Or incomplete.

Huh. Actually for this song - there are googleable lyrics out there.

I got it pretty close. I stand by it. Some sources disagree, pre-haps.
