a lot of sayings are stupid

For instance, take
"fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
- that's stupid! Why even bring angels into it? First, they're indestructible, like that episode of Highway to Heaven where that whole shotgun blast just caromed right off Michael Landon's chest. So it's stupid to say they fear to tread anywhere!

That saying is basically more insulting to angels than it is to fools. It's basically calling angels cowards, afraid where they shouldn't be. If what you want is to talk about fools, and not about angels, which it probably is, then you could get the idea across a lot better with something more to-the-point. A better saying would be something like:
"Fools are fucking stupid."

POINT MADE.

If you've got to say something, say it! Don't use some stupid saying, just because you heard it once or twice and a couple of the words fit.

Yeah! If fools weren't stupid they'd be called something else. Like "geniuses". No?

Exactly! It's practically a truism. Or even a tautology.

The great thing about these kinds of insults is, you can pretty much talk trash about fools all you want, and nobody's really ever going to get offended, because hardly anyone out there self-identifies as a fool.

As Mr. T said: "I pity the fool!" So you should, T. So you should.

Ah, but there are things to fear besides physical destruction.

"Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings, yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand." 2 Peter 2:10b - 12a

No, I don't understand what "beings" he's talking about, but the general idea is that even angels know how to have proper reverence for those who are above them on the cosmic hierarchy, yet people are capable of missing this entirely, especially when we "despise authority" (v. 10a).

I think you know this, I'm just playing the straight man here.

And of course there are those that say it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool then to speak out and remove all doubt.

I myself have never approved of that saying. Hmm that may be why so many people think I am a fool...

...wait..what were we talking about?

Jen - that's a good point. Here I am judging all things according to the earthly imperviousness of angels, but of course they could fear to tread on some matter simply out of tact. Which makes them arguably wusses, but that says more about those who'd make that argument than it does about the angels concerned. And I have no idea what beings he means either. The very mysteriousness of these beings makes you wonder how anybody could slander them.

@Alice - whatever you're talking about, THAT's what I'm trying to talk about!
