Mostly just talking about songwriting! But I think in pretty much any practice, the fact that you create, and the things that you create, are way bigger and better and more important and useful than anyone's idea of what "perfection" is supposed to be. If that makes sense? Perfection is too often an alibi for why we don't try.
Perfection can't be purpose. Perfection pertains to purpose, has no meaning at all except with regard to some purpose, and is entirely a subordinate concept to purpose. That's more or less what I mean by practice making perfection look pathetic. All great works are produced by one's practice.
I'm not saying there's no such thing as perfect! I've seen plenty of perfect in this life, but people hung up on perfection produce very little of it.
