You Will Love This One...

There are times that come, only once in your life...twice if you're lucky.

I know! That's because it's not out yet!

This is one of the songs they are working on for the forthcoming 2009 album. Indeed, as a "work in progress," the final version may be quite different.

In '07 they toured Time On Earth, in '08 they went right straight back on the road to kick even more ass and "road test" a slew of new material! It was pretty exciting.

Neil had said prior to the tour that this was an approach he'd long wanted to try, since it often felt like a given given new song sometimes didn't quite "resolve" until they had a chance to work it out night by night as part of the live set.

Picture a guy with his genius songwriting skillz saying something like that! But in fact, there are a few classics like "Distant Sun" where now-integral touches weren't added on until the touring phase. Every time I hear the album version of "Distant Sun" I miss the "with your finger on my pulse..." coda.

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" is another song with a fantastic post-album version evolution.

Here's the best I've come up with based on the two nights in SF they played it in front of me, plus a bajillion listens to this to fill in the gaps - but there are variations in the lyric and I'm sure even more as played on other nights!:

you know what it means to make it?
in the heart, with your destiny set?
and your shelter from trouble

it's a course in philosophy, yeah
what is life, is it just a dream, hey?
it's all a mystery, but somehow I know

that it's not what it used to be, no
we're suddenly free to let go
it's family, it's bringing us home

you will love this one
you will love this one
yes we can create
something magical, honey
there are times that come
there are times that come
only once in your life
and that's not alright

you know what it feels to me, babe?
the scent and chemistry say
all makes sense to me somehow

but it's not what it used to be, no
we're suddenly free to let go
it's family, that's bringing us home

you will love this one
you will love this one
'cause if we create
something magical, honey
there are times that come
there are times that come
only once in your life
twice if you're lucky

you will love this one
you will love this one

and you know what it means to me, babe

and we're not what it used to be no
suddenly free to let go
it's family it's bringing us home

you will love this one
you will love this one

there are times that come
our times that come

you will love this one
you will love this one

- that's the best composite I can make out!

I can't wait for the new album!!

And I stress: "work-in-progress"! I've seen various peoples' attempts to nail down the lyrics, and a few that were pretty choicely hilarious:

"You still feel teenage
- something magical, honey!"

BOY HOWDY!

I'm pretty sure that was a mishearing though. But I wouldn't put it past Neil to throw us a frisky curve ball some random evening.

No tour dates scheduled as far as I know, but they do attempt to publicize them. Just catch as catch can pretty much.

Apparently, it's "in the harbor that destiny set."

Or rather, that's what it was. The lyrics in the final version are pretty much all different!
