How Quickly Did It Take Me to Eat Those Dozen Donuts?

How quickly did it take me to eat those dozen donuts I bought on Sunday?

Just had the last one. Which makes it Wednesday. That's some portion of 4 days. I don't know about you guys, but for me, that's like a new world's record for slow! I don't think I've ever had a dozen donuts last that long in my house, or in any house I ever had anything to do with.

I had a couple rules to guide me in this achievement, rules like: do not bite more than one donut simultaneously (no "stacking"). One 1 glass of milk. No refilling the milk just so you can go get more donuts. No more than two donuts touching the plate at once (actually, here "stacking" is allowed).

I have hope for this result that maybe I've demonstrated some gains in self-control, maybe I can add donuts back onto the shopping list as a staple. I've demonstrated control of myself, and respect for the donut.

Actually it was almost exactly 3 days + 1 hour. Ok, not 4 days - still a record, though.

SHOOT! Now I have to go to the grocery store!

And I thought of you as I bypassed the coconut layer cake in the bakery yesterday.

I keep wanting to go back for that cake.

But should I? Is it even fresh still?

That icing looked pretty tight. I bet it holds in the freshness, to some degree.

I would be hoping after three days that you'd be getting a different cake. If it's still the same cake you put back on Sunday, it could just as easily be the cake someone else put back the Sunday before.

Now I have to go get cake.

The whole reason I try to pretend donuts don't exist is because if I bought a dozen donuts I'd EAT a dozen donuts. That night. Maybe all crammed in my pie-hole at once even! Definitely in fast succession. Definitely NOT four days.

I bought four creme eggs in a pack the other day to last the week and well...they didn't. The end.

Hm. I think I still have a few doughnuts floating around somewhere from the last time I got doughnuts, which was maybe the week before Lent started. So like two weeks ago. I can also tell you if I got a box of the Entenmann's doughnuts I prefer (the chocolate ones, or in second place the ones with the little crumb-balls on top), there would probably be at least two that went stale, especially if no one else was involved in eating them. If it wasn't plain not eating them, it would at the very least be my tendency to save and ration myself right into goods with mold or a certain granite-like texture. For instance, last night I had some crunchy cake, and that was just a piece of a piece. More crunchy cake remains! It's pretty good crunchy; cookielike. Last weekend it was normal texture, though. I'll only throw it out if it starts to taste weird (unlikely, from experience I know this cake just dries out) or when I get more cake/something like it. You never know if this is the last cake you'll ever be able to get, and you'd wish you hadn't thrown it away because it was a little stale.

My mother has always said this tendency of mine makes it seem like I lived through the Depression. I think it had more to do with watching Red Dawn a lot. No, that's not true, it started before that. But I'll bet it had to do with some Cold War disaster preparedness propaganda!

@Elliott - but did you?

@The Vegetable Assassin - I can picture you as The Donut Assassin!

@blue - oh, the crumb-balls ones are so good. Oh man, maybe I need to get those this time. You know I don't care for the waxy choc-enrobed ones!

We've all lived through a depression or two. At least those folks in the Great one weren't so alone in theirs. Not that I'm denigrating their hardship - obviously theirs was way worse! But in mine, or in yours (or in Elliott's, or in the Vegetable Assassin's), we didn't have the whole country pitching in and pulling together in a real public-spirited way.

Or in The Vegetable Assassin's case, Canada.

At least, I know I didn't get that kind of support and pitch-in. If you guyses did, I'm jealous.

By the way, now that I see your title again and actually digest it---what is up with that? "How Quickly Did It Take Me?" What does that even mean?

Yeah, that is true. It doesn't really sense out too well. I can offer no real excuse, no real justification.

Oh, I bypassed the coconut cake, with it's two pounds of sweet, delicious buttercream frosting. But I did buy a much smaller almond-glazed pound cake. It was the lesser of two evils to have something sweet in the house.

I don't ration, but I savor, knowing the staleness component. As we move into more humid times here in Florida, baked goods will start to mold in two days, so no reason to knowingly waste such goodness.
