Whoa! Vineland. Page 72 and 73 all of a sudden it hit me. This is the stuff people were talking all about: the so-called "Pynchon Effect."
Was it cumulative, to just kick in now like that? Doesn't appear to be the case. I went back, re-read some earlier passages. They are as they were before. Nope, not cumulative. It just suddenly kicks in right here. Page 72 and 73.
Pretty awesome stuff, though. If it doesn't sustain, I may have to quit on the rest of the book and just keep re-reading these two pages. Now this is the Pynchon I was given to expect.
